"The olive tree is a symbol of peace and hope. Just like in the Bible when the dove returned to Noah..."

My name is Nadia Abu Ghattas. My jewelry making started back in 2005. I was taking a class to learn how to carve wax to make molds that could be used to make gold and silver jewelry. I realized at that point that I wasn’t very good at carving. So I started to think creatively. I took a beautiful button and dipped it in wax to create a mold, and it worked! My classmates laughed at me, but I didn’t let that stop me. In my mind, then I knew that I could create a mold for anything. I started thinking towards natural items such as leaves, acorns, figs, anything with which I could create a mold. Eventually, I fell in love with the olive leaves. They are delicate and beautiful and, in Palestine, the olive tree is considered a sacred tree.

My inspiration for my designs is to know that I can walk outside into my own yard and choose a piece of Palestine, my homeland, and re-create its beauty for someone in the world who may never get to see this land. I’ve met people in other countries who’ve purchased my jewelry, and when they touch it and put it on, they start to cry because they have this special piece of Palestine. It really touches my heart.

The olive tree is a symbol of peace and hope. Just like in the Bible when the dove returned to Noah with an olive leaf, when someone in another part of the world purchases my jewelry, an olive leaf is traveling across the world and taking with it a symbol of hope and peace from my land.
